Why I want to leave Google.
A week ago I decided, that I want to try living without google services in the future.
There are a bunch of reasons and all of them boil down to “I don't want to stop giving this company the tremendous amount of data I am currently supplying them with”.
I don't trust them. I don't trust the path the country they reside in seems to take.
The final tipping point for me was their new “privacy setting” in chrome, which is the complete opposite of privacy. This is especially tragic since over the last decade nearly every other browser runs on chromium and is therefore a chrome, the only exception being Firefox.
So two thoughts crossed my mind:
- I have enough, there must be a way to get rid of them.
- How hard can it be, deleting Twitter wasn't so hard at the beginning of the year.
Let me just start by saying deleting Google needs a lot more work and dedictation than deleting Twitter, but does not necessarily need to be difficult.
In fact I try to find a way, that is accessible by as many people as possible, so I'm striving for the minimum of “tech literacy” needed.
I will not host my own mail server or NAS at home.
I will try to use as many services as possible with – hopefully – a good balance between usability and data protection.
And to make all that accessible to other people, I will blog about.
I will try to make small entries so writing and reading one of them does not require massive amounts of energy.
Let's see how this goes.
