Guardiola 'declares war' as anger erupts over accusations against protégé
Man City boss Josep Guardiola has locked horns. He has declared war on 'former Man United man' Roy Keane.
On March 3, British media outlet The Sun reported, “Guardiola is at war with Keane. Keane recently criticized Elling Holland as a League Two (fourth division) player, and Guardiola insisted that he would not criticize his former teammates after retirement.
City drew 0-0 at home against Arsenal in the 2023-2024 English Premier League (EPL) season at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, England, on Jan. 1. Holland started the match as a frontline striker. Despite playing full time, he didn't have the expected offensive impact, registering just two shots on goal. It was a frustrating performance, with crucial chances missed. “He looks like a Ligue 2 (fourth division) player. His general play needs to be improved,” he criticized.
Guardiola responded: “I don't agree with him (Keane). It's like he's saying I'm a manager of the second or third division. I don't think so. Holland is the best striker in the world, he helped us win the title last season,” said Guardiola.
“I'm surprised by ex-players, they're like referees when they retire. They always surprise me. Memories fade quickly. It's the same problem they have now. It's hurtful to be criticized by retired players. I don't know what will happen in the future, but I won't criticize my colleagues when I retire.”
Holland joined City in the summer of 2022 and scored a total of 52 goals in the EPL, UCL, and European Champions League last season. City went on to win the EPL, UCL, and FA Cup. Holland has scored a total of 29 goals this season despite the injury bug.
Meanwhile, City will host Aston Villa in the league on April 4. Guardiola said: “We played a special game against Arsenal. The reason we didn't create many chances is not down to Holland. He is exceptional.”
