“Hanwha signs free agent Shim Woo-jun for ‘4 years, up to 5 billion won’
The Hanwha Eagles have opened their wallets again.
On July 7, Hanwha announced, “We signed free agent infielder Shim Woo-joon. The contract is worth up to 5 billion won (4.2 billion won guaranteed, 800 million won option) for four years.”
Shim joined the KT Wiz in the second round of the 2014 draft (14th overall) and made his first-team debut in 2015.
In every season except for 2023 and the first half of 2024, when he played for the Sangmu, Shim has played in more than 100 games and has a career batting average of .254 with 275 RBIs and 156 stolen bases (0.788 stolen base percentage) in 1072 games. In the postseason, he didn't get many hits, but he also played stellar defense.
“The addition of Woo-Joon Shim strengthens our infield depth by providing us with a stable shortstop with the quick feet and operational skills we are looking for in the field,” Hanwha said.
This is the third consecutive year Hanwha has brought in a free agent from outside the organization. In 2022, the team brought in Chae Eun-sung from Itaewyang Oh Seon-jin for a total of 11.9 billion won, and last year it signed Ahn Chi-hong for a total of 7.2 billion won.
