'Kim Hyun-soo surpasses Kim Hyun-soo' 121 RBIs, new LG record, team first for non-Bokboks “Records are important, but winning as a team is more meaningful”

Austin, a foreign-born hitter for the LG Twins of the Korean Baseball Organization, has set a new RBI record for the LG franchise. He broke the record for most RBIs in a season.

Austin started at first base three times against Hanwha on July 7 at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul. He went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs, giving him 121 RBIs for the season. The 121 RBI is the most in a single season for LG. It broke the previous record of 119 set by Chae Eun-sung in 2018 and Kim Hyun-soo in 2020. LG snapped a two-game losing streak with the 9-3 victory.

Austin opened the scoring in the first inning with an infield hit that deflected off the pitcher's glove and toward the shortstop. Moon Bo-kyung hit a straight line drive to second base, but the runner was late to the plate and was thrown out at second for a double play.

In the third inning, Moon came to the plate with one out. Leadoff hitter Hong Chang-ki singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on Kim Hyun-soo's grounder to first. Austin grounded out to shortstop, allowing the runner to score from third. Austin tied the LG franchise record for most RBIs in a season with 119.

In the fifth inning, Austin drew a walk against Kim Seo-hyun. She then stole second and scored on Oh's RBI double.

Austin, who was retired on an infield grounder in the seventh inning, lined a single to right-center with runners on second and third in the eighth to bring home both runners. It was a two-run shot that made it 9-1 and gave him 121 RBIs on the season, the most in a single season in LG history.

“The record is important, but it means more that the team won the game,” Austin told Team First after the game.

“I tried not to think about it (the franchise single-season RBI record), but when I didn't get a hit for a while (after 118), I was secretly nervous because people were asking me when I was going to break the record. Now that I don't have to think about the record, I feel like I can play baseball without pressure,” he said of his new record.

As for the KBO record for most RBIs in a season (Park Byung-ho's 146 in 2015), Austin said, “I think I need one more season like August to break it, but I think it might backfire if I focus too much on my personal record, so I'm just trying to focus on helping the team win.”

In 24 games in August, Austin went 30-for-66 with 36 doubles, nine home runs, 35 RBIs and a 1.160 OPS. He led the league in home runs, RBI, on-base percentage, and OPS. He is in the running for the KBO August MVP award.
