Which non-commercial social network to use?
Different people use different things as a result of the information they have, their experiences, their relationships, tastes, worldviews, preferences and (eventual) methods of choice.
The recommendations I make here, therefore, are the result of my set of these perspectives.
So far, I've used (and examined) the social networks Akkoma, Firefish, Forte, Friendica, Hubzilla, Mastodon, Misskey, Mitra, Nostr, Pixelfed, Pleroma and (streams).
My favorite networks – and the ones I currently use – are Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte because, in my opinion, they offer much more interesting features and a much greater number of them than the other networks mentioned above. That's why I'm presenting them on this site.
For example, to compare the online experience you have on the social network you use today with the one you can have using the Hubzilla network, read our article on Hubzilla.
So, for the moment, these are my recommendations:
If you don't have technical knowledge about computers and the Internet and just want to open an account, choose the Hubzilla network.
If you have technical knowledge (about computers and the Internet) and you know how (and want) to install and maintain an instance on a server, read about networks (streams) and Forte and choose one of them.
(Note: If it's important for you to have the (optional) features of creating wikis and web pages integrated into your account, then choose Hubzilla).
