Compendium of Random Stuff

Interesting random stuff I find online, with some ramblings on the side

Photo of the M5Stack Cardputer Kit

From Liliputing:

The M5Stack Cardputer is a tiny computer with a keyboard, display, wireless functionality, and a built-in microphone and speaker… all of which makes it sound more impressive and functional than it really is. The display is a 1.14 inch TFT LCD screen. Its keyboard is designed for thumb typing (and doesn’t look very comfortable to use). And its processor is an ESP32 microcontroller, which isn’t exactly a speed demon.

This small gadget costs $29.90 at the time of writing. More details are available at the brand's online store.

đź”— A motivational post for people with chronic pain

I know it's hard to deal with chronic pain (I've been going through hell with fibromyalgia for over three years), and the stuff in the post's image is easy to forget. Save the image, if needed, so you can remind yourself of your worth when things get worse. 🤗

This is a simple, no-nonsense, cross-platform graphical user interface for Neovim (an aggressively refactored and updated Vim editor). Where possible there are some graphical improvements, but functionally it should act like the terminal UI.

Front-facing photo of the Tivoli Audio Songbook MAX Speaker

Tivoli Audio released a larger version of their famous audio system. This jumbo-sized version has:

  • 4″ subwoofer;
  • 4″ midrange;
  • .75″ tweeter;
  • built-in preamp;
  • DAB/DAB+/FM radio;
  • Bluetooth connectivity;
  • 10 hour battery life.

The design is beautiful, IMO. Too bad it costs $599.99.

This video, from the CATS AND KITTENS Youtube channel, was recorded on the Turkish island of Heybeliada.

đź”— Built for privacy: Partnering to deploy Oblivious HTTP and Prio in Firefox

This news caught me by surprise.

Ubuntu's 23.10 installer had hate speech when using the Ukrainian translation. This led the team to pull the ISOs from the mirrors until the issue is fixed.

From Linuxiac:

Due to an oversight, the Ubuntu 23.10 “Mantic Minotaur” desktop version installer was allowed to include phrases containing hate speech with obscene messages that had nothing to do with the installation process.

Based on an initial examination, these are related to the installation's Ukrainian translation. Due to their highly unacceptable messages, we are unable and unwilling to go into further detail about their content.

Bleeping Computer says the affected translation had anti-Semitic, homophobic, and xenophobic slurs.

This raises issues about trust in contributors and the moderation processes for Ubuntu and the FOSS world. Let's hope lessons are learned, and more robust moderation is implemented to prevent these issues and even potential malware injection.

The It's FOSS website shared an article on recording your screen with VLC. Sadly, I didn't get it to work on the GNOME Wayland session.

Someone shared a video on Reddit of a dog and his owner doing parkour. It's really wholesome and cool!
