Sancho misses, Evans hits home...'89th minute theater goal' City beat United on penalties! First Community Shield in five years

The winner of the 'Manchester Derby' was Manchester City. City lifted the Community Shield trophy for the first time in five years as they defeated a reunited Manchester United.

City defeated Manchester United on penalties in the 2024-2025 Community Shield at Wembley Stadium in London, England, on Tuesday (Aug. 10). After a 1-1 draw in regulation, City won 7-6 on penalties.

It was City's first Community Shield win since 2019. Despite boasting a historic four consecutive Premier League (PL) titles, City had finished runner-up in the Community Shield three times in a row from 2021 to last year.

However, City ended that streak with a hard-fought victory over United. In doing so, they avenged their FA Cup loss to United last season.

City started the game in a 4-3-3 formation. Jeremy Dookoo-Elling Holland-Oscar Bove, James McCarty-Mateo Kovacic-Nico O'Reilly, Joshko Gvardiol-Hubeng Dias-Manuel Akanji-Liko Luiz, and Éderson.

United lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Mason Mount, Ahmad Diallo, Kobi Mainu, Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez, Jonny Evans, Harry Maguire, Diogo Dalot, and Andre Onana started up front. Neither team was at 100 percent.

Both teams explored early on. City were the first to attack. In the 21st minute, Holland got on the end of a loose ball in the box, but Onana made the save. A minute later, Bove broke into the box and fired a left-footed shot that sailed over the bar.

The post denied City the lead. In the 24th minute, after a breakaway in the box, McCarty found the far corner of the goal with a left-footed curling shot that Onana couldn't stop, but the ball hit the post.

United fought back. In the 31st minute, Diallo played a one-two with Casemiro on the right and drove into the box. Instead of shooting directly, he crossed the ball to the onrushing Mount. It would have been a goal if he had gotten his foot on it, but he narrowly missed Mount's toe.

Both teams exchanged the decisive shots. In the 36th minute, Rashford broke into the back of the defense and unleashed a right-footed effort that went wide of the side netting. In the 44th minute, Dokou had a sharp shot that went wide of the side netting. The first half ended scoreless. There wasn't even a single shot on target.

In the second half, United rattled the net first. Nine minutes into the second half, Bruno slipped behind the defense on a counterattack and found the corner of the net with a fantastic mid-range shot. However, the goal was disallowed due to an offside flag.

United were the first to make a change. Eric ten Haag brought on Diallo, Maguire, Martial, and Mignolet for Alejandro Garnacho, Facundo Pellistri, Scott McTominay, and Toby Collier 13 minutes into the second half. City brought on Mateusz Nunes and Xavi for O'Reilly and Toku shortly afterward.

Rashford once again missed a chance. In the 30th minute, Garnacho sprinted down the right flank and sent a perfect ground ball cross to the other side. Rashford got his left foot on it and went straight at it, but the ball hit the post. Having survived the crisis, City took off McCarty in the 35th minute and brought on Bernardo Silva.

The long streak of zeroes was broken. In the 36th minute, on a counterattack, Garnacho won the ball on the left and used his pace to cut inside the box, where he fired a left-footed shot that split the net. United took a 1-0 lead.

City scored a dramatic equalizer. In the 44th minute, Bove drove down the right side of the box and crossed in front of goal. Silva headed it home to save his team from defeat. With the game still tied 1-1, the match went straight to penalty kicks without extra time.

The penalty shootout started with United on the front foot. It started well for United. Bruno rattled the net cleanly from the first kick, but City had Silva's kick saved by Onana. From there, both teams went back and forth until the third kick.

It was City who had the last laugh. United lost the lead when No. 4 Jadon Sancho's shot was blocked by Ederson, and City responded with a kick from No. 5 that was saved by the goalkeeper himself. Sancho, a former City youth player, helped his hometown team.

The tie came down to the eighth kick. Evans, United's veteran center-back, sent his shot soaring over the crossbar. City had a chance to end the game. Akanji's kick sailed past Onana and into the back of the net to seal City's seventh Community Shield title.

The only ball game in the Olympics... Women's handball captain Shin Eun-ju “I want you to support”

Shin Eun-ju (Incheon Metropolitan Government), the captain of the women's handball team, the only ball sport represented by South Korea at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, has spoken out about what she hopes will be her first and last Olympic appearance.

“The Olympics is something I've dreamed of since I was a kid,” Shin said on Thursday via the Korea Handball Federation. It's a stage I've dreamed about since I was a kid, and I've tried a lot, but I've also failed a lot, so I feel less pressure than other competitions,” she said.

“Of course, we're there to perform, but I hope it's a stepping stone for the juniors to grow as athletes,” he added.

The 11-time Olympic champions were drawn in Group A alongside Norway, Denmark, Germany, Slovenia, and Sweden. All of them are European powerhouses, and there are concerns that it will be difficult to get past the qualifiers.

“Even though we didn't perform well at the World Championships last year, our teamwork was really good,” said Shin Eun-ju, adding, “As young players, we quickly forgot about it and grew up faster.”

“In that sense, this European training camp was also the best because we had a lot of inexperienced players, and we were able to gain experience, and it was a big advantage for us to separate what we are good at and what we can do better,” she said.

“Another advantage is that there are a lot of new players who have joined the national team,” said Shin Eun-ju, adding that there is a lot of synergy in the current team, with many players trying to show the best of what they have.

“I think handball in Korea is just getting started. I hope the younger players can see how they will grow in the future,” he said, “and I hope the older players can take a deeper look and support how they finish what they think is their last stage.”

Meanwhile, the women's team, led by Henrique Signel, began preparations for the Paris Games on May 13 at the Jincheon Athletes' Village.

After an initial three-week training camp, 18 athletes traveled to Sweden and Norway for a European training camp from May 2-21.

After a short break, the team moved back into the Jincheon Athletes' Village on Jan. 1 and will continue their second domestic training camp until Feb. 8.

After that, the team will hold a second European training camp in Spain and the Netherlands until the 19th.

After that, the team will travel to Paris, the final destination, for a preliminary camp at the Korea Sports Federation. The team will arrive at the Olympic Village on Aug. 22 and play their first game against Germany on Aug. 25.

“Approve reappointment of sports organization executives, not me”

The president of the Korean Sports Federation, Lee Ki-heung, has asked the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to approve the abolition of the rule limiting the number of consecutive terms for the heads of sports organizations. He also added a proviso that he would not have to serve consecutive terms.

The Korea Sports Federation held an extraordinary delegates' meeting on Thursday at the Olympic Parktel in Bangdong, Songpa-gu, Seoul, and passed an amendment to its articles of association to remove the rule limiting the number of consecutive terms for the heads of sports organizations, which was approved by the board of directors. The existing articles of association stipulate that officers, including the president, can serve a four-year term and be reappointed once, and from the third term onward, they must go through the Sports Fairness Commission. On the same day, the board passed an amendment to the articles of association that eliminated the Sports Fairness Committee review process.

The reason for the amendment was due to personnel issues, the NOC continued to explain. Local sports federations and sports organizations are always short of qualified people to serve as executives. However, some have pointed out that the likes of Lee Ki-heung (re-elected) and Chung Mong-kyu (three-term president of the Korea Football Association) are pre-positioning themselves for long-term power.

In response, Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Yoo Yoo-chon vowed to “never approve the amendment to the articles of association” at a meeting with the sports sector on the 2nd. Minister Yoo said, “The KFA receives a huge government budget of 42 billion won, but school sports and elite sports are falling into disrepair. In this situation, what's the point of changing the articles of association to run for office once more?” “As one of the various discussions to increase the autonomy of the sports world, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is discussing the idea of directly granting budgets to local sports federations and sports organizations,” he said. Currently, the Korean Sports Federation receives the budget and distributes it to each sports organization.

“I've said many times that I'm not changing the articles of association to run for a third term,” said Lee Ki-heung, the president of the Korean Sports Federation, “so it's okay to exclude me, but we need to change the rules for the consecutive terms of other sports organization presidents. There are not enough people who can serve as officers of sports organizations or local sports federations, and the city and district presidents are paying their own money to serve, so we cannot create a fair committee to review their reappointments. I hope the Ministry of Culture will approve the revised proposal.” Lee's proposal was met with applause from the delegates.

Lee also refuted Minister Yoo's remarks point by point. “It's really wrong to say that the KFA spends hundreds of billions of dollars as it pleases,” Lee said, adding, “It's all discussed and approved by the Ministry of Culture. There is no way that the KFA can be used as a reader in a situation where it is subject to frequent audits by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, audits by the National Audit Office, and national audits.”

In addition, Lee said, “The courts make the judgment on the interpretation of the law, and the Constitutional Court makes the final interpretation of the law. Any other interpretation is arbitrary,” he said. The Sports Council has expressed the opinion that the MOC's budget execution may violate the National Sports Promotion Act. In response, Lee Jung-woo, director of the MOCA, said, “The authority to interpret and enforce the law lies with the government departments. The government interprets and enforces laws, not violates them,” which Lee refuted.

Lee also called for a public debate with the minister. This is a repeat of a proposal he made at the D-30 event at the Paris Olympics last month. “In order to discuss and clarify the future direction of sports policy, Minister Yoo should come to the debate. I will also participate.”

Emma Raducanu (Great Britain) shot to stardom in 2021 when she won the women's singles title at the US Open at the age of 19. Ranked No. 150 in the world, she became the first player to reach the top of a major after qualifying. Her victory was celebrated in the United Kingdom, with Queen Elizabeth personally congratulating her on winning the first major title for a British woman in 44 years, since 1977 Wimbledon champion Virginia Wade.

But afterward, her career went downhill, as she was plagued by injuries and poor form, never making it past the second round at six of the 10 majors she played. Without a win on the regular tour, his world ranking had fallen to No. 135. He said he was encouraged to see his country England come from behind to beat Slovakia 2-1 in the round of 16 at Euro 2024 on Sunday (Aug. 1) after Jude Bellingham's dramatic equalizer in stoppage time.

Radukanu defeated No. 33 Elise Mertens (Belgium) 2-0 (6-1 6-2) in the second round of the women's singles competition on Thursday. The victory marked the first time in more than three years that she reached the third round of a major after winning the 2021 US Open. “I want to thank my home fans for their loud and enthusiastic support,” Radkhanou said. His third-round opponent will be Maria Sakkari (9th-GRE). In the mixed doubles of the tournament, Radhukanu will be paired with British tennis hero Andy Murray, 37, the 2013-2016 Wimbledon men's singles champion, who will retire after the Paris Games.

Naomi Osaka (113th, Japan) fell 0-2 (4-6 1-6) to Emma Navarro (17th, USA) in her second women's singles match of the day. Osaka, who made her comeback this year after giving birth, was knocked out in the first round at the Australian Open and packed up in the second round at both the French Open and Wimbledon.

Guardiola 'declares war' as anger erupts over accusations against protégé

Man City boss Josep Guardiola has locked horns. He has declared war on 'former Man United man' Roy Keane.

On March 3, British media outlet The Sun reported, “Guardiola is at war with Keane. Keane recently criticized Elling Holland as a League Two (fourth division) player, and Guardiola insisted that he would not criticize his former teammates after retirement.

City drew 0-0 at home against Arsenal in the 2023-2024 English Premier League (EPL) season at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, England, on Jan. 1. Holland started the match as a frontline striker. Despite playing full time, he didn't have the expected offensive impact, registering just two shots on goal. It was a frustrating performance, with crucial chances missed. “He looks like a Ligue 2 (fourth division) player. His general play needs to be improved,” he criticized.

Guardiola responded: “I don't agree with him (Keane). It's like he's saying I'm a manager of the second or third division. I don't think so. Holland is the best striker in the world, he helped us win the title last season,” said Guardiola.

“I'm surprised by ex-players, they're like referees when they retire. They always surprise me. Memories fade quickly. It's the same problem they have now. It's hurtful to be criticized by retired players. I don't know what will happen in the future, but I won't criticize my colleagues when I retire.”

Holland joined City in the summer of 2022 and scored a total of 52 goals in the EPL, UCL, and European Champions League last season. City went on to win the EPL, UCL, and FA Cup. Holland has scored a total of 29 goals this season despite the injury bug.

Meanwhile, City will host Aston Villa in the league on April 4. Guardiola said: “We played a special game against Arsenal. The reason we didn't create many chances is not down to Holland. He is exceptional.”
